1950 | Braves center fielder Sam Jethroe is named the NL Rookie of the Year. Jethroe is the oldest player to be named Rookie of the Year, having spent the first seven seasons of his pro career playing in the Negro Leagues.

1982 | Brewers shortstop Robin Yount is named AL MVP. Yount hit .331/.379/.578 (166 OPS+) with 29 HR and 114 RBI while leading the league in hits (210) and doubles (46).

1992 | Lou Piniella is named manager of the Seattle Mariners.

1992 | Drayton McLane Jr.'s purchase of the Houston Astros from John McMullen is completed. McLane paid $115 million for the franchise.

1993 | Giants left fielder Barry Bonds is named NL MVP for the third time in four years. Bonds hit .336/.458/.677 (206 OPS+) with 46 HR and 123 RBI.

1995 | Dodgers right-hander Hideo Nomo is named NL Rookie of the Year. He's the first Japanese player to win a major award in MLB.

2000 | Giants manager Dusty Baker is named NL Manager of the Year. He joins Tony LaRussa as the only managers to win the award three times.

2004 | Astros right-hander Roger Clemens is named the AL Cy Young Award winner for a record seventh time. Clemens, 42, is the oldest winner of the award and becomes the first pitcher to win it with four different franchises. Clemens is 18-4 with a 2.98 ERA (145 ERA+).

2011 | Nationals catcher Wilson Ramos is kidnapped outside of his home in Venezuela while playing winter ball. Ramos is held for two days until he is released without harm.

1948 | The White Sox acquire left-hander Billy Pierce from the Tigers for All-Star catcher Aaron Robinson. Pierce spent 13 seasons pitching for Chicago, going 186-152 with a 3.19 ERA (123 ERA+) while making seven All-Star appearances.

1965 | Giants outfielder Willie Mays is named NL MVP for the second time. Mays hit .317/.398/.645 (185 OPS+) with 52 HR and 112 RBI.

1971 | Cardinals third baseman Joe Torre is named NL MVP. Torre hit .363/.471/.555 (181 OPS+) with 24 HR and 137 RBI, while leading the league with 230 hits.

1978 | A year removed from winning the AL Cy Young Award, the Yankees traded left-hander Sparky Lyle (along with cash and four minor leaguers) to the Texas Rangers for left-hander Dave Righetti (and four minor leaguers). Righetti will go 8-4 with a 2.05 ERA (174 ERA+) and win AL Rookie of the Year with the Yankees in 1981.

1987 | Phillies right-hander Steve Bedrosian narrowly beats Cubs right-hander Rick Sutcliffe in voting for the NL Cy Young Award. Bedrosian is 5-3 with a 2.83 ERA (151 ERA+) and 40 saves. Sutcliffe is 18-10 with a 3.68 ERA (116 ERA+).

1988 | Dodgers right-hander Orel Hershiser is named the NL Cy Young Award winner. Hershiser is 23-8 with a 2.26 ERA (149 ERA+) with 15 complete games.

1992 | MLB owners deny a request by San Francisco Giants ownership to move the team to St. Petersburg, FL.

1997 | Blue Jays right-hander Roger Clemens is named the AL Cy Young Award winner, becoming the first pitcher to win the award four times. Clemenes is 21-7 with a 2.05 ERA (222 ERA+) and 292 strikeouts.

1903 | Jimmy Collins is named the manager of the Boston Americans. The team will change its name to the Red Sox during his tenure and win the first-ever World Series.

1958 | The Kansas City Athletics announce that they will have 58 night games on their schedule in 1959, a new record.

1981 | Dodgers left-hander Fernando Valenzuela is named the NL Cy Young Award winner, becoming the first rookie to win the award. Valenzuela was 13-7 with a 2.48 ERA (135 ERA+) with 11 complete games and 180 strikeouts.

1982 | Joe Altobelli is named manager of the Baltimore Orioles, replacing Earl Weaver.
