1960 | Dodgers outfielder Frank Howard is named the NL Rookie of the Year.

1990 | Former Indians, Phillies, and Reds catcher Bo Díaz is killed when a rooftop satellite dish he is installing at his home in Venezuela falls and crushes him. He was 37.

2009 | Twins catcher Joe Mauer is named the AL MVP. Mauer wins his third batting title while hitting .365/.444/.587 (171 OPS+) with 28 HR and 96 RBI.

2015 | Dave Roberts is named the manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers, replacing Don Mattingly.

2016 | Dodgers right-hander Ralph Branca, who gave up the “Shot Heard ‘Round the World” home run to Bobby Thomson in the 1951 postseason, passes away at his home in Rye, NY. Branca was 90.

1953 | Walter Alston is named the manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers, replacing Chuck Dressen. Alston will manage the club for 23 seasons.

1969 | Dave Bristol is named the manager of the Seattle Pilots, but the team will move to Milwaukee before the start of the 1970 season.

1975 | Gene Mauch is named the manager of the Minnesota Twins, replacing Frank Quillici.

1982 | Orioles shortstop Cal Ripken Jr. is named the AL Rookie of the Year.

1986 | Tom Kelly is named the manager of the Minnesota Twins, replacing Ray Miller.

1997 | Tim Johnson is named the manager of the Toronto Blue Jays, replacing Cito Gaston.

2005 | The Red Sox acquire third baseman Mike Lowell and right-handers Josh Beckett and Guillermo Mota from the Florida Marlins for minor league shortstop Hanley Ramirez and right-handers Anibal Sanchez, Jesús Delgado, and Harvey Garcia.

2009 | Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols is named the NL MVP for a second consecutive year and third time overall. Pujols hit .327/.443/.658 (189 OPS+) with 47 HR and 135 RBI.

2015 | NC Dinos outfielder Eric Thames is named the MVP in the KBO, after becoming the first 40/40 player in league history.

1941 | Indians shortstop Lou Boudreau is named the team’s player/manager. At 24, he’s the youngest manager in league history.

1944 | Kenesaw Mountain Landis, baseball’s first commissioner, dies of a heart attack in Chicago. He is 78.

1947 | Robert Hannegan and Fred Saigh purchase the St. Louis Cardinals for $4 million from Sam Breadon.

1966 | Reds infielder Tommy Helms is named the NL Rookie of the Year.

1969 | Royals outfielder Lou Piniella is named the AL Rookie of the Year.

1970 | Yankees catcher Thurman Munson is named the AL Rookie of the Year.

1981 | Brewers right-hander Rollie Fingers is named the AL MVP, becoming the first relief pitcher to win the award. Fingers is 6-3 with a 1.04 ERA (333 ERA+) with 28 saves. He will also win the AL Cy Young Award.

1985 | White Sox shortstop Ozzie Guillen is named the AL Rookie of the Year.

1986 | Athletics outfielder Jose Canseco is named the AL Rookie of the Year.

2002 | Theo Epstein is named the general manager of the Boston Red Sox.

2004 | Nintendo US purchases a controlling stake in the Seattle Mariners.

2010 | Infielder Kazuo Matsui agrees to a contract with the Rakuten Golden Eagles, returning to the NPB after seven years in MLB.

2020 | The Softbank Hawks become the first team to sweep the Japan Series in back-to-back seasons.

2022 | Yakult Swallows third baseman Munetaka Murakami is named the NPB’s Central League MVP after winning the Triple Crown. Murakami set the NPB home run record by a Japanese player with 56.

1909 | A group headed by sportswriter Horace Fogel purchases the Philadelphia Phillies for $350,000.

1948 | National League president Ford Frick pays $350 for funeral services for Hack Wilson. Wilson had died days earlier from alcohol abuse in a Baltimore hospital, but was unidentified, and his body had gone unclaimed. Wilson would be elected to the Hall of Fame in 1979.

1960 | Following the Washington Senators’ relocation, team officials reveal that the new American League team in Minnesota will be called the Twins.

1963 | Reds second baseman Pete Rose is named the NL Rookie of the Year.

1975 | Red Sox center fielder Fred Lynn becomes the first rookie to be named both Rookie of the Year and MVP.

2007 | Jerry Royster is named the manager of the KBO’s Lotte Giants, becoming the first foreign-born manager in the league. Royster has experience both as a player and manager in the minor leagues.

2009 | Yankees public address announcer Bob Sheppard officially retires at the age of 99. Shephard had been with the Yankees organization since 1951.

A recording of Sheppard’s “Number two. Derek. Jeter.” will be played throughout the shortstop’s career before his first at-bat of each home game to honor the longtime announcer.

2013 | Rakuten Golden Eagles right-hander Masahiro Tanaka is named the NPB’s Pacific League MVP.

2014 | Yomiuri Giants right-hander Tomoyuki Sugano is named the NPB’s Central League MVP.

2014 | Cuban outfielder Yasmani Tomás agrees to a six-year, $68.5 million contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks after defecting.

2024 | Yomiuri Giants right-hander Tomoyuki Sugano is named the NPB’s Central League MVP for a second time.

Nov. 27

1922 | Cardinals outfielder Austin McHenry dies from a brain tumor. He was 27.

1941 | Yankees outfielder Joe DiMaggio is named the AL MVP in a close vote over Red Sox outfielder Ted Williams. DiMaggio hit .357/.440/.643 (185 OPS+) with 30 HR and 125 RBI. Williams hit .406/.553/.735 (235 OPS+) with 37 HR and 120 RBI.

1956 | Dodgers right-hander Don Newcombe is named the winner of the first Cy Young Award. It won’t be until 1967 when each league will name a winner. Newcombe is 27-7 with a 3.06 ERA (131 ERA+). He will also be named the NL MVP.

1972 | The Yankees acquire third baseman Graig Nettles from the Cleveland Indians for catcher John Ellis, infielder Jerry Kenney, and outfielders Charlie Spikes and Rusty Torres.

1974 | Commissioner Bowie Kuhn suspends Yankees owner George Steinbrenner for two years following his conviction for illegal campaign contributions to Richard Nixon.

1985 | Cardinals outfielder Vince Coleman is named the NL Rookie of the Year.

1997 | Hall of Fame slugger Buck Leonard dies at the age of 90. Leonard was widely considered one of the greatest hitters in the Negro Leagues and was inducted to the HOF in 1972.

2012 | Marvin Miller, who served as the head of the MLB Players Association from 1966 to 1983, dies at 95. Miller will be inducted to the Hall of Fame in 2020.

2023 | NC Dinos right-hander Erick Fedde is named the KBO’s MVP after being the first foreign pitcher to win the pitching Triple Crown.

Nov. 28

1927 | Billy Evans resigns as an umpire to become the first general manager of the Cleveland Indians.

1938 | White Sox right-hander Monty Stratton had his right leg amputated as a result of a hunting accident.

1957 | Braves left-hander Warren Spahn is named the Cy Young Award winner. Spahn is 21-11 with a 2.69 ERA (130 ERA+) and 18 complete games.

1969 | Dodgers second baseman Ted Sizemore is named the NL Rookie of the Year.

1978 | Sparky Anderson is fired by the Cincinnati Reds after nine seasons despite winning four National League pennants and two World Series titles.

1979 | Dodgers right-hander Rick Sutcliffe is named the NL Rookie of the Year.

2013 | Eight months after winning the World Baseball Classic, a parade is held in Santo Domingo to celebrate the Dominican Republic national team.

2018 | The Oakland Athletics announce plans to build a stadium on a downtown waterfront site. Like other attempts to construct a new ballpark to replace the Oakland Coliseum, this plan will ultimately fail.

2023 | Orix Buffaloes right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto is named the NPB’s Pacific League MVP.

1957 | New York City Mayor Robert Wagner forms a four-member committee to find a replacement for the Dodgers and Giants after both teams moved west.

1976 | Outfielder Reggie Jackson agrees to a five-year, $3.5 million free agent contract with the New York Yankees.

1990 | A group of investors led by team president Claude Brochu agreed to purchase the Montreal Expos from Charles Bronfman for $85 million.

2011 | Bobby Valentine is named the manager of the Boston Red Sox.
