1915 | Jacob Ruppert and Tillinghast L’Hommedieu-Huston (yes, that was really his name) purchase the New York Yankees for $460,000.

1932 | Future Hall of Fame first baseman Bill Terry enters into a dispute with the New York Giants, who want him to accept a pay cut from $22,500 to $13,500 for the coming season. Terry had finished second in the NL batting race in 1931 while leading the league in runs (121) and triples (20).

1948 | A DC-6 plane carrying a Puerto Rican Winter League team, the Santiago Baseball Club, crashes. All 32 occupants, including Dominican baseball legend Pedro Báez, are killed.

1949 | The Stone Quarry site is selected as the home for the new Milwaukee County Stadium. Construction won’t begin until October 1950.

1960 | The Philadelphia Phillies trade outfielder Richie Ashburn to the Chicago Cubs for shortstop Al Dark, third baseman Jim Woods, and right-hander John Buzhardt.

1965 | Wally Pipp dies of a heart attack at age 71 in Grand Rapids, MI.

1968 | Ewing Kauffman purchases the Kansas City Royals.

1971 | Detroit Tigers left-hander John Hiller suffers chest pains, which doctors diagnose as a heart attack. The 27-year-old will miss the 1971 season, but return the next year and collect a then-record 38 saves in 1973.

1973 | MLB owners approve the designated hitter. AL teams will begin using it that season. NL teams would not adopt the DH until 2022.

1973 | Attorney Louis Nippert purchases a 51% stake in the Cincinnati Reds.

1977 | The Chicago Cubs trade outfielder Rick Monday and right-hander Mike Garman to the Los Angeles Dodgers for first baseman Bill Buckner, shortstop Iván de Jesús, and right-hander Jeff Albert.

1983 | Billy Martin is named the Yankees manager for the third time in eight years, replacing Clyde King.

2000 | Hall of Fame right-hander Bob Lemon dies at 79.

2000 | Carlton Fisk and Tony Perez are elected to the Hall of Fame, receiving 79.6% and 77.2% of the vote, respectively.

2006 | The Tampa Bay Rays agree to a two-year, $1.4 million deal with Japanese right-hander Shinji Mori after a nine-year career with the Seibu Lions. Mori will suffer a shoulder injury in spring training and will never pitch in the Rays system.

2010 | The Cincinnati Reds sign 21-year-old Aroldis Chapman to a six-year, $30.25 million contract just months after he defected from Cuba.

2011 | Trevor Hoffman announces his retirement.

2014 | Alex Rodríguez had his 211-game suspension for PED use reduced to 162 games on appeal. He will miss the entire 2014 season and forfeit $25 million in earnings.

2016 | Hall of Famer Monte Irvin dies at age 96 at his home in Houston, TX.

2024 | The Chicago Cubs sign Shota Imanaga to a four-year, $53 million contract.

1903 | Detroit Tigers right-hander Win Mercer commits suicide by inhaling gas in a San Francisco hotel. He was 28.

1921 | Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis officially begins his role as baseball’s first commissioner.

1946 | Ted Williams receives his discharge from the U.S. Marine Air Corps after three years of service.

1972 | Tigers owner John Fetzer announces plans for a $126 million, 52,000-seat domed stadium in downtown Detroit. A failed bond issue and construction of the Pontiac Dome would ultimately doom the project.

1983 | Juan Marichal and Brooks Robinson are elected to the Hall of Fame, receiving 83.7% and 92.0% of the vote, respectively.

1988 | Willie Stargell is elected to the Hall of Fame, receiving 82.4% of the vote.

1993 | Peter Magowan leads a group of investors who purchase the San Francisco Giants.

1994 | Steve Carlton is elected to the Hall of Fame, receiving 95.6% of the vote.

1997 | The San Diego Padres acquire the rights to Japanese right-hander Hideki Irabu through the posting system. Irabu insists he only wants to play for the Yankees and forces a trade.

1999 | The ball hit by Mark McGwire for his 70th home run sells at auction for $2.7 million.

2009 | Rickey Henderson and Jim Rice are elected to the Hall of Fame, receiving 94.8% and 76.4% of the vote, respectively.

1922 | Buck Weaver, one of the eight “Black Sox” players banned from baseball following the 1919 World Series, applies for reinstatement but is denied by Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis.

1939 | Yankees owner Jacob Ruppert dies of phlebitis at age 62.

1978 | Hall of Fame manager Joe McCarthy dies at age 90.

1982 | Henry Aaron and Frank Robinson are elected to the Hall of Fame, receiving 97.8% and 89.2% of the vote, respectively.

2005 | Mark Attanasio purchases the Milwaukee Brewers for $223 million.

2018 | The Pittsburgh Pirates trade right-hander Gerrit Cole to the Houston Astros for right-handers Michael Feliz and Joe Musgrove, infielder Colin Moran, and outfielder Jason Martin.

2023 | Alex Ramirez and Randy Bass are elected to the Japanese Baseball Hall of Fame, the first foreign players elected in almost 30 years.

1954 | Joe DiMaggio marries Marilyn Monroe.

1963 | The Chicago White Sox trade shortstop Luis Aparicio and outfielder Al Smith to the Baltimore Orioles for right-hander Hoyt Wilhelm, outfielder Dave Nicholson, third baseman Pete Ward, and shortstop Ron Hansen.

1970 | Mets general manager Johnny Murphy dies of a heart attack at age 61.

1981 | Frank Robinson is named the manager of the San Francisco Giants, becoming the first African American manager in the NL. He’d already been the first in the AL when Cleveland hired him in 1975.

1987 | Catfish Hunter and Billy Williams are elected to the Hall of Fame, receiving 76.3% and 85.7% of the vote, respectively.

2001 | The Toronto Blue Jays trade left-hander David Wells and right-hander Matt DeWitt to the Chicago White Sox for left-hander Mike Sirotka, right-hander Kevin Beirne, right-hander Mike Williams, and outfielder Brian Simmons. Sirotka will turn out to have a shoulder injury and will never pitch again.

2002 | Outfielder Barry Bonds agrees to a five-year, $90 million contract extension with the San Francisco Giants.

2008 | The St. Louis Cardinals trade third baseman Scott Rolen to the Toronto Blue Jays for third baseman Troy Glaus.

2010 | Right-hander Josh Johnson agrees to a four-year, $36 million contract extension with the Miami Marlins.

2020 | Third baseman Josh Donaldson agrees to a four-year, $92 million contract to join the Minnesota Twins.

Jan. 15

1936 | Horace Stoneham is named president of the New York Giants, succeeding his late father, Charles. Stoneham, 32, will remain in the role for 40 years and oversee the team’s move to San Francisco.

1942 | President Franklin Roosevelt sends his famed “Green Light Letter” to Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis. Roosevelt is encouraging MLB to continue playing through World War II as “playing the sport is good for Americans,” and he encourages owners to schedule more night games to allow wartime workers the chance to attend.

1964 | Outfielder Willie Mays agrees to a one-year, $105,000 contract extension with the San Francisco Giants. The deal makes him the highest-paid player in the sport.

1981 | Bob Gibson is elected to the Hall of Fame, receiving 84.0% of the vote.

1990 | First baseman Cecil Fielder agrees to a one-year contract to join the Detroit Tigers after hitting 38 home runs with the NPB’s Hanshin Tigers in 1989.

2002 | The Los Angeles Dodgers trade outfielder Gary Sheffield to the Atlanta Braves for outfielder Brian Jordan and left-hander Odalis Perez.

2014 | Left-hander Clayton Kershaw agrees to a seven-year, $215 million contract extension with the Los Angeles Dodgers. The deal is the largest given to a pitcher and makes Kershaw the highest-paid player in baseball.

2021 | Infielder DJ LeMahieu agrees to a six-year, $90 million contract to return to the New York Yankees.

Jan. 16

1964 | American League owners vote 9-1 against a proposal by Kansas City Athletics owner Charlie Finley to move the team to Louisville, KY.

1970 | Outfielder Curt Flood files a lawsuit challenging the reserve clause. Flood will lose the suit, but it opens the door for the eventual implementation of free agency and salary arbitration.

1974 | Mickey Mantle and Whitey Ford are elected to the Hall of Fame, receiving 88.2% and 77.8% of the vote, respectively.

1996 | MLB’s executive council approves the addition of interleague play in 1997.

2001 | Dave Winfield and Kirby Puckett are elected to the Hall of Fame, receiving 84.5% and 82.1% of the vote, respectively.

2025 | Ichiro Suzuki is among four players elected to the Japanese Baseball Hall of Fame.

Jan. 17

1952 | Detroit Tigers owner Walter Briggs dies at the age of 74.

1995 | The Great Kobe earthquake causes damage to five NPB stadiums across Japan. More than 6,000 people lose their lives.

2002 | Commissioner Bud Selig reveals that the Washington D.C. area is a “prime candidate” to get a team if the league sees relocation or expansion in the near future.

2003 | Outfielder Torii Hunter agrees to a four-year, $32 million contract to re-sign with the Minnesota Twins.

2008 | MLB owners unanimously vote to extend Commissioner Bud Selig’s term through the 2012 season.

2013 | Rosters for the first World Baseball Classic are announced.

2014 | Hideo Nomo and Kazuhiro Sasaki are among four elected to the Japanese Baseball Hall of Fame. The duo is the first to play in MLB and receive the honor in Japan aside from Lefty O’Doul (who is among those credited with bringing baseball to Japan). Nomo is just the third player, along with Sadaharu Oh and Victor Starffin, in NPB history to gain election in their first time on the ballot.

2025 | Right-hander Roki Sasaki agrees to a contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
