1966 | The Atlanta Braves trade third baseman Eddie Mathews, infielder Sandy Alomar, and right-hander Arnold Umback to the Houston Astros for right-hander Bob Bruce and outfielder Dave Nicholson. Mathews is the only player to play for the Braves in Boston, Milwaukee, and Atlanta.

1972 | Roberto Clemente is supervising the delivery of relief aid and supplies to earthquake victims in Managua, Nicaragua, when the DC-7 plane crashes shortly after takeoff from Puerto Rico because it was overweight. Clemente dies at 38.

1974 | Free agent right-hander Catfish Hunter ends a long bidding war, agreeing to a three-year, $3.75 million contract to join the New York Yankees. Hunter’s salary is triple that of any other player in the league.

1979 | The Basic Agreement expires, triggering 19 months of hostile negotiations between the players and owners that result in the 1981 strike.
