TBNL: Deals, deals, and more deadline deals
Let the trade deadline chaos commence!
Houston adds infield depth
The Astros acquired infielder Ramon Urias from Baltimore for minor league right-hander Twine Palmer. The move was mostly in response to losing Isaac Paredes for the rest of the season to a hamstring injury.
Boston adds a lefty to the bullpen
The Red Sox acquired left-hander Steven Matz from St. Louis for minor league first baseman Blaze Jordan. Matz gives Boston another lefty in the bullpen who can work multiple innings. Jordan, who’s reached Triple-A after being a 3rd-round pick in 2020, might be best known for going viral as a teenager after hitting some massive shots during a home run derby event held at Tropicana Field.
Cubs add a reliever
The Cubs acquired right-hander Andrew Kittredge from Baltimore for minor league shortstop Wilfri De La Cruz.
Suarez back to Seattle
The Mariners got their big bat, acquiring third baseman Eugenio Suárez from Arizona for first baseman Tyler Locklear and pitchers Hunter Cranton and Juan Burgos. Seattle landed the biggest bat available at the deadline, bringing Suárez back to town (he played for the Mariners in 2022-23). Several teams were believed to be pursuing the third baseman.
Jays add Bieber
The Blue Jays acquired right-hander Shane Bieber from Cleveland for minor league right-hander Khal Stephen. Bieber is still working his back from Tommy John surgery. Stephen was Toronto’s 2nd-round pick last summer and he’s impressed in his limited time in the minors.
Tigers add a reliever
The Tigers acquired right-hander Paul Sewald from Cleveland for future considerations.
… and another
The Tigers acquired right-hander Kyle Finnegan from Washington for two minor league pitchers, R.J. Sales and Josh Randall.
Padres strike big, adding Mason Miller
The Padres acquired right-hander Mason Miller and left-hander JP Sears from the A’s for four minor leaguers: shortstop Leo De Vries and pitchers Braden Nett, Henry Baez, and Eduarnial Nunez. Arguably the biggest deal of the day. San Diego lands one of the most electric arms in Miller, but whether they keep him in the closer role or move him to the rotation remains to be seen. De Vries is the No. 3 prospect in all of baseball, per MLB Pipeline. The three arms all ranked in San Diego’s Top 20 prospects.
Phillies get an outfielder
The Phillies acquired outfielder Harrison Bader from the Twins for minor league outfielder Hendry Mendez and pitcher Geremy Villoria. Bader has always been a strong defensive option in the outfield, but he’s never hit much.
Dodgers add to the bullpen
The Dodgers acquired right-hander Brock Stewart from the Twins for outfielder James Outman.
Another reliever to Detroit
The Tigers acquired right-hander Codi Heuer from the Rangers for cash considerations.
Yankees land a late-inning reliever
The Yankees acquired right-hander David Bednar from the Pirates for catchers Rafael Flores and Edgleen Perez and outfielder Brian Sanchez. The 30-year-old Bednar has served as Pittsburgh’s closer for the last four seasons, collecting 101 saves to pair with a 3.23 ERA (133 ERA+). New York is parting with some catching depth in the deal. Flores is at Triple-A and some scouts feel he’s ready for the majors defensively. Perez is a high-contact hitter still in Class-A.
Padres pay steep price for catcher upgrade
The Padres acquired catcher Freddy Fermin from the Royals for a pair of right-handers, Stephen Kolek and Ryan Bergert.
Mets upgrade in center field
The Mets acquired center fielder Cedric Mullins from the Orioles for three minor leaguers: third baseman Anthony Nunez and pitchers Raimon Gomez and Chandler Marsh.
Bird is the word in New York
The Yankees acquired right-hander Jake Bird from the Rockies for minor league infielder Roc Riggio and left-hander Ben Shields.
Carlos Correa returns to Houston
The Astros re-acquired infielder Carlos Correa from the Twins for minor league left-hander Matt Mikulski. Minnesota is paying $33 million of the $103 million remaining on Correa’s contract. Correa has agreed to move over to third base, with Jeremy Pena locked in at shortstop.
Astros also add an outfielder
The Astros acquired outfielder Jesus Sanchez from the Marlins for right-hander Ryan Gusto and minor league infielder Chase Jawosky and outfielder Esmil Valencia.
Rangers add a southpaw
The Rangers acquired left-hander Danny Coulombe from the Twins for minor league left-hander Garrett Horn.
Padres add some power
The Padres acquired first baseman/designated hitter Ryan O’Hearn and outfielder Ramon Laureano from the Orioles for six players: infielder Cobb Hightower, first baseman Victor Figueroa, and pitchers Boston Bateman, Brandon Butterworth, Tyson Neighbors, and Tanner Smith. A solid haul for the Orioles.
… and an infielder
The Padres acquired infielder Will Wagner from the Blue Jays for minor league catcher Brandon Valenzuela.
Dodgers add outfield depth
The Dodgers acquired outfielder Alex Call from the Nationals for minor league right-handers Eriq Swan and Sean Linan.
Rangers make first move on the starter market
The Rangers acquired right-hander Merrill Kelly from the Diamondbacks for three minor league pitchers: Kohl Drake, David Hagaman, and Mitch Bratt.
Yanks move Peraza
The Angels acquired infielder Oswald Peraza from the Yankees for minor league outfielder Wilberson De Pena and international bonus pool money.
Cubs add piece to bench
The Cubs acquired utilityman Willi Castro from the Twins for minor league pitchers Ryan Gallagher and Sam Armstrong.
KC picks up a lefty
The Royals acquired left-hander Bailey Falter from the Pirates for left-hander Evan Sisk and first baseman Callan Moss.
A’s dump Andujar
The Reds acquired outfielder Miguel Andujar from the Athletics for right-hander Kenya Huggins.
Padres add a starter
The Padres acquired left-hander Nestor Cortes from the Brewers for outfielder Brandon Lockridge and minor league shortstop Jorge Quintana.
Sox add another former Dodger starter
The Red Sox acquired right-hander Dustin May from the Dodgers for minor league outfielders James Tibbs and Zach Ehrhard.
Yankees add another infielder
The Yankees acquired infielder Jose Caballero from the Rays for outfielder Everson Pereira and a PTBNL.
Rays trade for an arm
The Rays acquired right-hander Adrian Houser from the White Sox for infielder Curtis Mead and minor league pitchers Ben Peoples and Duncan Davitt.
Pirates flip Rogers to Chicago
The Cubs acquired Taylor Rogers from the Pirates for minor league outfielder Ivan Brethowr.
Yanks add another reliever
The Yankees acquired right-hander Camilo Doval from the Giants for four minor leaguers: catcher Jesus Rodriguez, infielder Parks Harber, and pitchers Trystan Vierling and Carlos De La Rosa.
Minnesota’s selloff continues
The Rays acquired right-hander Griffin Jax from the Twins for right-hander Taj Bradley.
Tigers add another arm
The Tigers acquired right-hander Charlie Morton from the Orioles for minor league left-hander Micah Ashman.
Jays shop at the Twins
The Blue Jays acquired right-hander Louie Varland and first baseman Ty France from the Twins for outfielder Alan Roden and minor league left-hander Kendry Rojas.
Royals land an outfielder
The Royals acquired outfielder Mike Yastzemski from the Giants for minor league right-hander Yunior Marte.
Rangers add a reliever
The Rangers acquired right-hander Phil Maton from the Cardinals for minor league right-handers Mason Molina and Skylar Hales. St. Louis also received some international bonus pool slot money.
Brewers pick up an arm
The Brewers acquired right-hander Shelby Miller and (injured) left-hander Jordan Montgomery from the Diamondbacks for … nothing. In an unusual transaction, this was a pure salary dump from Arizona’s standpoint.
Phillies scoop up former Tigers prospect
The Phillies acquired right-hander Matt Manning from the Tigers from minor league outfielder Josueth Quinonez.
That’s 49 completed trades since Wednesday morning (roughly 36 hours). A wild trade deadline.
